Association of Deep Sea Going Artisanal Fishermen (ADSGAF) was formed
in the year 1992 exclusively to promote the fishing activities of deep
sea fishermen of the Thoothoor region of Kanyakumari District,
Tamilnadu. Using small mechanized boats they operate long lining
method for shark fishing, and gill-netting for other species in the
deep sea. As they migrate all over the west coast of India, they
confront many problems. While fishing in the deep seas with their
small-mechanized boats, they often fall prey to the suspicions of the
Coast Guard and are taken into custody for questioning. Confused by
the intentions of the coast guard, the innocent fishermen try to
escape and fall into unnecessary legal hassles and problems. Moreover,
not knowing the local dialect and culture of the landing/migrated
place often leads to many difficulties and problems. Even though long
lining does not adversely affect local fishing methods and is an
eco-friendly fishing practice , there is often antagonism towards
these fishermen. The local fishermen are at loggerheads with these
fishermen mainly due to the jealousy emerging from better fish catches
and also from the local ignorance of long line fishing methods. Huge
capital and operational investments are also a major problem which
local fishermen never take into account. They are treated unfairly by
the locals and the police. It is in this backdrop, an association was
formed with the support of South Indian Federation of Fishermen
Societies (SIFFS) a prominent fishermen federation of cooperatives in
South India.
